Hay-on-Wye
Wales

Hay-on-Wye is a picturesque market town on the welsh-english border. With a population of only 2000 but with 40 antiquarian bookshops it is also called the book village.  Its density of second hand book stores is unique in the world.

For a London family harryclarkinterior designed an entirely new interior in a late 18th century townhouse. As the building’s original layout was left untouched, harry clark concentrated on two of his greatest talents: the application of fresh but delicately balanced colour, often unusual in its combination at first glance. And the use of design ideas which are at times best called tongue in cheek.
While the drawing room received an elegant wall coat of “Elephant’s Breath“ dusty pink by Farrow & Ball, the library was covered in dark purple and turquoise blue, and finished off with a yellow cream picture rail.

Above the old fire place harry clark installed a neo-classical gold mirror ornament. The boy’s bedroom was decorated with Bansy’s graffiti motives on bespoke wallpaper. The mix of design-classics like the Lounge-Chair by Charles and Ray Eames, the client’s own antiques and made to measure-pieces by harry clark converted a late classic british house into an unconventional interieur of sophistication made for the more refined taste.
